KING CARDINAL

Cardinals are basically the rock stars of backyard birds. As an artist, I can’t resist their bold red feathers and the sense of hope and joy they seem to carry wherever they go. There’s something kind of magical about spotting one, and honestly, I’m one of those people who believe and take comfort in thinking that a cardinal sighting means a loved one is checking in from the other side.

They’re also famous for loyalty and love—cardinals usually mate for life and are super devoted partners, so they’ve become symbols of romance and the kind of stability you find in a close-knit family. And that pop of red? It stands out, especially against a grey winter, making cardinals a symbol of resilience and hope when things feel tough.

Their name actually comes from the red robes worn by Roman Catholic cardinals, which is why they are also associated with vitality and eternal life. Native American traditions see cardinals as bringers of good luck, devotion, and sometimes even rain. And for many, they’re comforting spirit guides—little flashes of color and hope when you need it most.

Each work begins with an intricately rendered pencil drawing on an 8″ x 8″ wood panel, laying the foundation for the composition. I then introduce color through a refined glazing technique, allowing luminous layers to build depth and vibrancy. The background is completed with expressive, textured paint, a conscious nod to the tumultuous environments in which wildlife must persevere.
