Elkind

The elk captivates me with its commanding presence and sweeping antlers—an enduring symbol of strength, resilience, and quiet bravery. I am inspired by how its annual shedding and regrowth of antlers reflect cycles of renewal and transformation, mirroring the creative process itself.

To me, the elk stands for balance: it moves gracefully within the herd, yet maintains an independent, regal spirit. This harmony between connection and individuality is something I strive to capture in my work.

In this piece, the circle represents the elk’s ongoing cycle of shedding and renewal, while white dahlias evoke purity and new beginnings.

Each work begins with an intricately rendered pencil drawing on a wood panel, in this case it’s 14″ x 11″, laying the foundation for the composition. I then introduce color through a refined glazing technique, allowing luminous layers to build depth and vibrancy. The background is completed with expressive, textured paint, a conscious nod to the tumultuous environments in which wildlife must persevere.
